Phillies Condemns Chinese Genocide Campaign Against Tibet
Seattle, Wash., April 20: Libertarian Presidential candidate George Phillies today condemned the Communist Chinese government's efforts to destroy the Tibetan culture. "By encouraging Chinese citizens to move to Tibet," Phillies noted, "the Chinese government has made the Tibetan people a minority in their own cities. In the long run, Chinese Communist plans would reduce Tibetan culture to a high-altitude tourist attraction. It is hardly surprising that the Tibetan people are, for better or worse, rising up against Chinese efforts to destroy Tibet. I cheer for the Tibetan people, and wish them well in their struggle to regain independence and safety for their culture."
"Lamentably, it is very difficult for Americans to influence the atrocious behavior of the Chinese government, which it has shown over the past five decades," Phillies noted. "You can choose your tourism plans. Americans able to afford trips to China can choose to go someplace else. Sometimes you can choose between buying goods made in China or equivalent goods made elsewhere. By buying from elsewhere, you reduce the ability of the Chinese government to fund its army of occupation in Tibet."
"On a positive note, the history of central Asia shows that in the long run external oppressors face great challenges in maintaining their occupations. The Russian occupation of Afghanistan was never truly successful. In the end, the Soviet Army was withdrawn by its own government," Phillies reminded Americans. "We can hope that the Chinese Army of Occupation in Tibet someday receives the same orders 'come home now'."
